BIRMINGHAM - BRISTOL
PORTRAIT OF A FAMOUS MIDLAND ROUTE
PART TWO - CHELTENHAM TO BRISTOL AND BATH
by Stephen Mourton and Bob Pixton

This book continues the historical journey, mainly during the steam era, along the important and heavily used Birmingham - Bristol route.  Leaving Cheltenham, where the MSWJ gave the Midland access to Southampton, the line continues to Gloucester and relatively fast run to the heart of the rival GWR - Bristol.  At Mangotsfield, the Midland had a branch to Bath, where connection was made with the Somerset & Dorset and trains for Bournemouth.  The Midland also ran to Avonmouth Docks, an important source of traffic.

Informative captions enhance the pictures, which are not just of trains and the varied motive power in steam days, but also of stations, signal boxes, freight yards and tunnels, the whole giving a good account of the line's fortunes over the years.
